15 Strange but True CBD/Cannabis/Hemp Facts
- CBD & Cannabis: In the 19th century, Queen Victoria of England used CBD-rich cannabis to alleviate menstrual cramps. SEE! Royal CBD enthusiasts have been around for centuries!)
- Cannabis: Aged cannabis makes you sleepier. When THC degrades over time, it converts to a sedating chemical called cannabinol (aka CBN). This cannabis compound is five times more sedating than THC, though it’s fairly slow to form.
- Hemp: A 1619 law REQUIRED farmers to grow hemp. It was used to make rope, clothing & sails. George Washington & Thomas Jefferson owned hemp farms.
- CBD: It can negate the effects of THC like anxiety & paranoia.
- CBD: It can increase alertness if you partake in a small dose.
- CBD: It can help you sleep if you partake in a larger dose, even if you have insomnia.
- CBD: Decreases social anxiety by calming down your amygdala, a part of your brain that controls fear.
- CBD: It outperformed both vitamin C and vitamin E at protecting neurons from inflammation and oxidative damage.
- CBD & Cannabis: We contain cannabinoid receptors! Cannabidiol, along with a number of other chemicals found in cannabis plants, work naturally with a mammal’s cannabinoid receptor sites, which make up the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and which are found primarily in the brain and central nervous system.
- CBD & Cannabis: It IS NOT possible to overdose on as they’re non toxic. (I’ve always found the quote, “A cannabis overdose is called a good night’s sleep.”, hilariously true!)
- CBD & Cannabis: “Substance Abuse: Research & Treatment” reported that states that have implemented medical marijuana programs have already seen a 25% drop in deaths by opioid overdose.
- Cannabis: It could promote better breathing! A 2002 study observed THC’s ability to restore respiratory stability by modulating serotonin signaling.
- Hemp: The first crop grown in many states was hemp. 1850 was a peak year for Kentucky producing 40,000 tons. Hemp was the largest cash crop until the 20th century. (State Archives.)
- Hemp: Rembrandt’s, Van Gogh’s, Gainsborough’s, was painted on hemp linen...as were most early canvas paintings. (No wonder older art is so interesting!)
- Cannabis: “Medical” marijuana was legal during prohibition. You COULD buy whiskey during this time, but ONLY if it contained cannabis!..then, when prohibition ended, cannabis became illegal. (I don’t know about you, but I personally feel MUCH more comfortable sharing the road with someone who has just consumed two joints rather than with someone who just slammed two shots of hard liquor.)
